A 21st Century take on a 50's Hairstyle...

Right then..... I did promise the antics of my attempt at doing pin curls to create a 40's/50's pageboy hairstyle....

Well if nothing else this will give you a good laugh!

And so, last night it all began...

Having watched Aya's video on her blog Strawberry Koi, I had some idea as to the principles to follow, and so after parting my hair and sectioning it off I began to curl sections into coils and, using bobby pins, holding each section in place...

the first side went quite well, I found it all rather therapeutic actually, curling away whilst watching the TV, and fending off silly comments and laughter from Paul!

Once both sides had been completed and I had pin curls everywhere, I followed Aya's next tip, cover your hair in a scarf and go to bed like that!

OK - Paul really fell apart at that one!

Anyway it worked, as, after I got up this morning and had my shower, I took of the scarf and discovered it was all still in place and had stayed quite well...

I began to remove the pins one at a time, not expecting much. As you can see my hair has quite a frizzy curl to it anyway, so it's all in the lap of the gods as to what it will look like.

I was amazed to see beautifully defined curls in the place of the pins - and they stayed put amazingly!

It then all started to go horribly wrong once I brushed it out - BAD IDEA - I should have left the curls there I think, and so after all that what does my hair look like.....

Pretty much the same I'm afraid!

Needless to say - This was not an unpleasant task to do, and it was not at all uncomfortable to sleep in, which was a surprise, so I shall definitely do it again, but this time keep the curls....

What do you reckon?

You have lovely hair, and it looks nice in the two styles... mine on the other hand is thin and lank... now a lot shorter as I have just had 6 inches taken off of it for the Summer..lol time to do the colour again me-thinks.

Thank you so much - unfortunatley I've got to 40 and still cannot tame it!

Well I think that plait looks great. I can only do an ordinary plait in mine, wish I could manage a french plait but can't.

Loved the pictures, the one with the scarf is really funny.

I too have thick unruly hair but it has a natural curl and still can't tame it at 53!!! I can never get it to stay up for long if it's just pinned up.

When I was small my mother used to put ringlets in it by just using her fingers, she never needed to use rags, and it always looked lovely.

I have taken to using something called a 'Stylee' now, they are great because I can put my hair in a ponytail, just put the sides up, or put it all up, you can do loads of styles with them. I first saw them on a tv shopping channel but now I buy direct from the lady who invented them, she's a hairdresser. They come in various colours, with 3 or 4 pieces of material across them and have two hair combs attached each side, they are elasticated to hold your hair in place and they also do them in a child's size.

Brilliant idea, wish I'd thought of it.

The curls looked really cute - I think you did a good job with that.

In my last post I said French plait, of course I meant skull plait.

I have French on the brain because I would love to be able to do a French Pleast myself but haven't managed it yet.

wow, you are so calm and patient...this would've driven me nuts..it looks so lovely , tis a shame you brushed it but you werent to know!...do you have the nerves to do it again this weekend?? would look awesome I think, youve got great thick hair, mines thin and boring!I used to have long hair and was taught by a friend when I worked at M & S 20 years ago in Brighton, to do a french plait on my hair, killed my arms for ages being in the position!!if I had long hair now it would be in a french plait all the time..

Thanks everyone, and yes Mel I shall be doing it again - nearly did it this avo but I would have turned up at Pilates with damp hair covered in pins and scarf! Now that would have been worthy of a picture don't you think!

The French or Skull plait just takes patience and practice whilst watching the TV - if you think about what you are doing you just get it all wrong - I have to lie across the armchair sideways so that my head hangs over the armside and the weight of my hair drops down over the side of the chair - I just cannot do it sitting upright with a mirror in front of me - it is certainly a sight to behold!
